Sanctuaries at Sea
With mental health and gut health at the forefront of everyone’s minds, cruise lines are upping the ante for onboard wellness amenities.

Otium Wellness Program One of the most innovative spa offerings at sea, Otium is inspired by the Roman baths concept and the idea that a well-balanced experience should be indulgent. “You could either enjoy a celery juice or a glass of chilled Champagne and some Calvisius caviar,” says Barbara Muckermann, chief commercial officer of Silversea. “Luxury is about choice, and this goes as much for, say, the best mixology program, as for the way you care for your body and mind.” The program consists of a customized multidimensional experience that begins before you step into the spa: Choose a fragrance that will accompany you, a robe or kimono, and create a personalized path that combines special treatments, thermal areas, and natural elements and ingredients. After the spa, your journey continues by the pool or in your suite with a series of amenities and then, before going to bed that evening, a completely redesigned sleep experience. Silversea developed a mattress, the Otium Soft Touch, to accompany a new pillow menu, selection of blankets, and pillow mists.

A Wellness Journey, Beyond The third ship in the cruise line’s Edge Series, Celebrity Beyond, takes to the sea this spring with a fully immersive health and fitness program. Attracting the next generation of cruise lovers, the new ship rivals the best spa resorts on land with a holistic approach to healing the mind and body. Its AquaClass Sky Suites feature floor-to-ceiling ocean views, private verandas, and a host of wellness amenities, such as The Retreat, an exclusive resort-within-a-resort area for suite guests only. In addition to king-sized cashmere mattresses and pillow menus, the AquaClass experience offers private dining with clean cuisine and plant-based options, biodynamic wines, and sustainable seafood dishes. A spa concierge, preferential rates on spa packages, priority spa reservations, and onboard spa credits are just some of the reasons bookings for these staterooms are at their highest levels ever. Australia’s revolutionary F45 Training program with its unique station-based, heart rate–monitored functional team training workouts puts your metabolism in overdrive to keep you burning calories all day. Plus, a partnership with Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand, Goop, provides curated mindfulness content and delicious nutrition-focused menu items, such as Fruity Chlorella smoothies. In fact, a unique Women in Wellness program has brought together some of the leading practitioners in the wellness industry to cultivate a guest experience centered around one’s emotional, physical, and spiritual needs.

Regent Seven Seas

Serene Spa & Wellness Building on the suggestion that travel is a holistic experience that reenergizes and restores the mind, body, and spirit, Regent created a menu of services that originate from many of the 450 destinations to which it sails. With globally renowned brands like Elemis and Kérastase being used in therapies and salon offerings respectively, the cruise line also features fitness and personal training classes, plus a series of wellness excursions at certain ports and nutrition-centric cuisine onboard. Some of the exclusive treatments worth noting include: The Regent Massage, a full-body therapy that uses sea buckthorn from the Mediterranean coastline; Around the World Massage, fusing techniques with basalt from China, coconut poultice from the Caribbean, argan oil from Morocco, bamboo from Asia, and scents of Indian cardamom and Egyptian coriander; Sea Lavender & Samphire Body Polish, drawing inspiration from Northern Europe to hydrate skin with a nourishing, exfoliation duo; and Deep Sea Heat Mask & Massage, using bladderwrack seaweed from along the Baltic Coast to recharge your body and alleviate tension and muscular distress. Roses round out this unique selection with a Calming Rose Facial from the UK and a highly concentrated Kérastase Elixir Ultime 24-Carat Indulgent Ritual from Morocco to nourish and protect hair.

Mindful Living Program Across all of the cruise line’s ships is a holistic spa and wellness experience developed in partnership with spiritual well-being guru Dr. Andrew Weil, but the latest offerings are on the new expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit. Each features an entire deck devoted to Spa & Wellness, designed by the renowned hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany. The 3,700-square-foot space integrates the concept of a floating forest with a textured, tree-inspired art mural, natural stone flooring, muted sage and orange colors, and wood and bronze accents. The spa’s yoga and fitness areas feature floor-to-ceiling ocean views, which are a unique design element in the sauna as well. The program itself is led by a specially trained Mindful Living Coach and offers yoga and guided meditation sessions, plus seminars on a variety of topics ranging from integrative medicine to nutrition.
