Cover Artist: Cai Guo-Qiang
Internationally acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang draws on a variety of symbols, narratives, traditions and unique materials. Cai’s use of gunpowder has become central to his work, leading to his experimentation with explosives and the development of his signature ignition events. Drawn to the medium for its myriad associations, his gunpowder work, in addition to his repertoire of large-scale installations and social projects, draws on Eastern philosophy, Maoist sentiment and contemporary social issues. The Spring issue’s cover art, Red Lilies, was part of his solo exhibition Flora Commedia earlier this year at the Uffizi. If your travels take you to Italy, don’t miss Cai’s current exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (through May 20), which features the aftermath of an explosion event in the Amphitheatre of Pompeii to echo the ancient city’s volcanic destruction.
